Dear 70.67.37.33,
There has been important news from Turkey, confirming the government's intention to proceed with the Akkuyu nuclear plant. On December 2, 1999, following a summit meeting of leaders in the government coalition, Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit confirmed the intentions of the government to proceed with Akkuyu, saying "We will reach a decision within this month on the tender" (AFP, December 3, 1999).
Please remember, that even if Turkey does select a nuclear vendor to build the Akkuyu plant, the contract will require further negotiation of at least six months (or longer), and a deal could still collapse for economic or political reasons. If there is an announcement, this will be the time to intensify our opposition campaign.
Some more late-breaking news -- Cypriot House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou has called for support from European Union member states and other Mediterranean countries to oppose Akkuyu, calling it a "very real and grave threat" (Cyprus News Agency, December 2, 1999).
Our campaign against Akkuyu continues to make progress in Canada. For your interest, I have attached a transcript of a CBC radio feature that aired today on Akkuyu.
Best wishes, David H. Martin Nuclear Awareness Project -- Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada
