Resolution on salmon netcages and atlantic salmon escapes
September 24, 1998
Since escaped exotic Atlantic salmon have now reproduced multiple generations of offspring
in British Columbias wild natural river system.
And since wild natural Pacific salmon populations are in crisis and face habitat loss and
disease from escaped Atlantics and their offspring, and since industry and government have
misled the public about the risks of introducing exotic species such as Atlantic salmon we
demand the following:
- Open salmon netcages must be banned in all Canadian waters and replaced with safe closed
containment systems no later than December 31, 1999.
- Canada must call upon the United States to ban open salmon netcages since Atlantics are
escaping from cages in the U.S.A. into Canadian waters.
- Canada must immediately prohibit the importation of Atlantic salmon eggs into Canada and
all existing egg and fry stocks must be destroyed.
- The industry must be forced by Canada to pay for the removal of all escaped Atlantic
salmon and Atlantic salmon offspring from B. C. waters.
