Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has endorsed the people's pledge for wild salmon, a comprehensive, science-based plan to protect and restore wild salmon.

Governor Locke is taking comments now on his draft salmon recovery plan so we are asking our members to call, write or email Governor Locke today and urge him to take the people's pledge for wild salmon...

** ask him to make the State Salmon Recovery Plan detailed and effective in the areas of immediate action, funding, and enforcement.
** urge him to be a strong leader and take immediate action for wild salmon and clean water!
** explain that protecting and restoring salmon is important to safeguard our water supply, to protect our unique quality of life, and to make sure the Northwest is a safer and healthier place for our families.

Wild salmon are an indicator for the future of our water and families...they are the "canary in the coal mine" for the Northwest. Salmon numbers have been rapidly declining for years. Salmon are dying from the same things that affect people: industrial pollution and runoff that get in our water, runaway development that kills our waterways, timber clearcutting that ruins our streams, and dams that create deadly river conditions for migrating salmon. We must work together to protect and restore our water and our wild salmon.

Campaign for the Northwest, formed by eleven leading environmental groups, is working to influence decision-makers and Governor Locke to develop an effective Salmon Recovery Plan that will protect and restore wild salmon.
Governor Locke is currently writing the State Salmon Recovery Plan, which is scheduled to be released this fall. This is a critical window of time for writing letters to the editor that ask Governor Locke to be a strong leader for wild salmon. Campaign for the Northwest ran radio ads and met with his staff where we asked him to act on the measures of the People's Pledge for Wild Salmon. The Pledge is a science-based, comprehensive plan written by Campaign for the Northwest that summarizes the actions needed to recover healthy, sustainable, and harvestable runs of wild salmon and steelhead.

WHAT WILD SALMON NEED...
Clean Water: Protect and restore water quality by preventing pollution, cracking down on illegal water polluters, and protecting land around our waters.

Enough Water: Leave enough water in streams for the needs of wild salmon and steelhead.

Habitat: Provide healthy streams, shorelines, forests, wetlands, and estuaries and ensure that development does not harm wild salmon and steelhead habitat.

Safe Passage: Modify dam operations -- including removal of some dams -- to provide more natural river conditions and safe passage for wild salmon and steelhead.

More Wild Salmon: Manage harvest of wild salmon and steelhead for long-term reproduction and survival; and reform hatcheries to make natural production a top priority.

Enforcement: Enforce existing laws that help protect and restore our state's water for people and for wild salmon and steelhead.

Funding: Fund programs to help wild salmon and steelhead and stop funding programs that harm them.

Note: measures above taken from the People's Pledge for Wild Salmon
