CO-OP STUDENTS HAVE THE SKILLS THAT CAN HELP YOU!

Forestry, Fisheries, and Wildlife field technologists will be available to
commence a four or eight month work term early in May.

The BCIT Renewable Resource Technology CO-OP students possess a well-rounded knowledge of the natural resource industry and are trained in field management methods including assessment, surveying, inventory work, research, data collection, and administrative aspects such as producing computerized technical reports. BCIT’s programs are applied training courses and focus on ‘doing the work’ as opposed to merely studying ‘how to do the job’. A high percentage of the classes take place in a field or lab environment and are taught in a practical, hands-on format.

The BCIT Forestry students are developing a comprehensive understanding of forestry methods relating to forest management, botany, ecology and soils, photo interpretation and mapping, silviculture and reforestation, fire protection and management, measurements, engineering, and logging production and utilization. They are familiar with current Forest Practice Code and Regulations, Forest Act, and the Ministry of Forests Act.

Students studying in the BCIT Fish, Wildlife and Recreation program cover the management of fish, wildlife and wildland recreation including habitat ecology, environmental inventory techniques and environmental law with respect to these resources. They are well-versed in plant, animal, bird, and fish identification and are prepared to work long and hard hours at remote field / camp locations, in all kinds of weather conditions.

Our students come from regions all over the province, and afar, but have chosen BCIT as their institute of choice to complete their applied training in Forestry and Fish, Wildlife and Recreation. Our students are interested in being considered for employment province-wide, and are willing to relocate.

The average age of the BCIT CO-OP student is 25. Most have had previous experience and / or education in addition to their BCIT applied studies, which may be an added-value to you as a CO-OP employer. Several of the BCIT CO-OP students already hold degrees, diplomas, and / or certificates obtained previous to their commencement at BCIT.

BCIT Renewable Resource Technology students have the ability to communicate effectively, complete tasks in a timely manner, and perform safely and effectively independently, or as team members, with minimal supervision. They are self-directed, physically fit, positive thinkers, with a genuine desire and willingness for life-long learning.

In today’s marketplace, more and more resource-sector employers are hiring workers on a project-specific basis to meet their immediate needs. CO-OP work arrangements can provide organizations the flexibility they need to stay responsive, by providing a direct access to a pool of skilled and qualified forestry, wildlife and fisheries field technologists to complete short-term projects.  BCIT RENEWABLE RESOURCES TECHNOLOGY COOPERATIVE EDUCATION http://www.renewres.bcit.bc.ca/co-op

Provincial / Federal Salary Subsidy Programs are available to help you Hire a CO-OP student. BC Student Summer Works offers up to $4.00/hour wage subsidy to employers who provide employment between May 1, 1999 and September 1, 1999. There is no deadline for applications, it is a first come opportunity. For more information call 1-800-784-0055 or visit http://www.youth.gov.bc.ca/programs/.

Summer Career Placements (formerly the Challenge program) is a program that enables private, public and non-profit employers to create career-related summer jobs for students. The amount of the wage subsidy depends on the employer type: private - $3.38; public - $4.25; and non-profit - $7.17 / hour.

SCP proposals are judged on how well the proposed jobs prepare students for the labour market and the type of supervision, learning or work experience offered. Employers gain by hiring high-school, college or university students for 6 – 16 weeks, and students benefit by gaining experience in their chosen fields.

Application forms for Summer Career programs (SPC) are available at your local Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) office. The deadline for receipt of applications is March 26th, 1999.
