Below is a sample of my communications with the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency.

From: Information Requests To: "'brogerso@island.net'" Subject: FW: Aluminium Smelters Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 11:30:06 +0100 Thank you for your inquiry. I have received the following information from our specialists, which I hope is of some use to you. The technology to be used in the smelting process and abatement techniques for emissions to be provided will determine potential discharges and discharge levels. Discharges may be gaseous, aqueous or involve disposal operations to land. Gaseous discharges could include particulates, fluoride and PAH's. Aqueous discharges may contain particulates, fluoride, cyanides and PAH's and similarly leachate from land disposal may contain these substances. Technology has evolved considerably both in smelting technology and abatement techniques and provided the Smelter is designed and operated to BATNEEC any potential environmental problems should be minimized. Thank you From: Bobby Rogerson Sent: 12 February 2001 23:32 To: Information Requests Subject: Aluminium Smelters I am a member of an environmental group operating locally in Port Alberni, British Columbia. We have concerns regarding the possible environmental effects of a proposed smelter in our immediate area. Any information on likely effluents---gaseous, particulate or chemical residue---would be greatly appreciated. We are aware that there are smelters in Scotland, and you may have some pertinent information which would assist in our decision to accept such an installation, or otherwise. Thank you.
