RE- forest destruction.
To Premier Ujjal Dosanghi., Parliament Buildings, Victoria, V8V 1X4..
and all friends of our earth.
March 7, 2000.
Respected friends:
As of today, the dead bodies of giant Douglas firs lie piled in huge heaps beside the newly constructed road as far as one can see. They were trees in Cathederal Grove that long ages ago had not rooted themselves within McMillan Park. Cathedral Grove has been visited by millions of tourists who want to experience a forest of real live old growth . It had partly survived the blowdown of 1997, and an earlier one, but it is now unprotected from wind throw. Cutting continues up towards Mount Arrowsmith on the right. Will this travesty go on year after year by a plantation-oriented company that is now seeking certification?
Unprotected also are the Great Bear Forest, home of many endangered species, and beautiful Haida Gwaii, and at least 32 sites of old growth on the B.C. mainland coast that are slated for demolition.
In the Stoltmann Wilderness, half a dozen non-violent young people who were working to protect these ancient trees in August 1999, were viciously set upon by corrupted attackers.
On Crown Land, where the Forest Practices Code applies, the law is frequently ignored as in the Slocan Valley, with the collusion of provincial and federal governments that allow themselves to be goaded by the U.S.A. But trees on B.C. land that is classified as "private" (apparently to be read as "holy") are no more protected than authentic Canadian jobs.
This butchery is an assault upon the planet.
Yours sincerely,
(Mrs) Sue Frazer, Fax 250-723- 4666.
