Dear Rob:
- I attended the Information Sessions put on by TimberWest and was alarmed to see that one
of the engineering plans for logging includes a 90.8 hectare clearcut situated 100 metres
from Hal Creek. I asked Steve Lackey about this plan which indicates 66,067 cubic meters
of wood is available for harvest there and he told me they will not cut all the trees. He
stated: "There are some trees we dont want so there will be some patches of
trees left."
- Forest Renewal BC has already spent over $200,000.00 rehabilitating Hal Creek at the
foot of the mountain after large clearcuts on Crown land wrecked the hydrology of the
creek and resulted in massive washouts. Large amounts of rocks were place at several areas
along the creek to slow down the water flow.
- Another area of concern is a clearcut of 39.7 hectares on either side of Mulcaster Creek
where 27,176 cubic meters are available for harvest. It appeared from the engineering
plans that a riparian zone of 15 to 20 meters will be left on each side of the creek.
- We sincerely hope that this planned logging on the Beauforts will not result in more
money having to be spent by Forest Renewal BC on repairs to creek systems.
Thank you for the space and time you are devoting to this important
issue.
Yours sincerely,
Maureen Sager
