Rezoning of the Burde St. Lot This email was received from Liisa McInnis, a resident living directly across from the land to be rezoned:
Hello, my name is Liisa McInnis and my husband John and I live at 3333
Burde St. directly across from the property to be rezoned. We are
cultivating a small organic market garden and orchard to sell locally grown
produce at the farmers market.
On may 12 there is a public hearing of J. McManus's application to rezone
Plan 68122 from Future Residential and Open Space to 57 single residential
1/4 acre lots.
This property features the ravine by Dry Creek that forms part of the green
belt that goes right into town. If you view the google map, it is a huge
corridor that supports a wide variety of native flora and fauna. Hundreds
of species of birds, frogs. The Log Train Trail is on the other side if the
road.People are always on the trail, enjoying nature and birdwatching.
This property should be carefully considered for its environmental value, as
well as a natural refuge for people and wildlife close to town.
How would a subdivision impact? Loss of habitat, loss of native species,
loss of access to public. Buildings, cars, lawns, fences, concrete instead.
It would surely impact the Dry Creek salmon habitat.
Any feed back on this matter? It's important that people know what's going
on.
Thank you .
Liisa McInnis
On the proposed rezoning site is the old Redford homestead. **The agenda for the May 12th, 2008 Port Alberni City Council meeting (part of which that was about the Burde St. lot) can be found here. Unfortunately, few showed up to the meeting to speak against the rezoning and the movement was passed. **What we lost: pictures of the Burde St. Lot can be found here. **Across the road from this lot is the Log Train Trail and the "Beaver Ponds Trail". Pictures of this area can be found here. All pictures taken by Jennifer Pistotnik.
