Weyerhaeuser owns and has cutting rights to 67 percent of the Little Qualicum River Community Watershed including Cathedral Grove, which the company proposes to log this month.
Weyerhaueser's warm-up for Cathedral Grove is the proposed logging of 7 hectares of the tiny 12-hectare Little Qualicum River Floodplain forest identified as the second largest floodplain forest remaining on the east coast of Vancouver Island by Environment Canada and BC Ministry of Environment. The floodplain forest is listed as an endangered, rare and sensitive ecosystem that provides the nursery forest for all 7 wild salmonid species. The Little Qualicum River is one of the most popular recreational fishing rivers on Vancouver Island.
The Little Qualicum River District Water Works intake pipe is only meters downstream from the proposed logging on this floodplain. The community is currently on a boil water order.
Weyerhaeuser intends to dispose of its floodplain lands once they are logged, but refuses to negotiate with the Qualicum Beach community groups working to acquire the lands BEFORE the proposed logging . Logging would disqualify the floodplain from funding by conservation organizations.
PLEASE email, write, fax or phone, Linda Coady, Vice-President Weyerhaeuser TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and ask the company to respect the Safe Drinking Water Bill that is currently in its formulation stages and hold off logging on the Little Qualicum River Floodplain until that time. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The company has 67 percent of the Little Qualicum River Community Watershed where it can show off its model logging!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you.
