Alberni Valley Local Events

This beautiful waterfall, at 40 feet, is one of the highest in the area. Cold Creek, which flows from Lacey Lake, plunges down beside a 220 foot cliff of conglomerate rock, an unusual outcropping of the formation which underlies the Alberni Valley.

The trail to the Falls follows Cold Creek winding through moss-covered trees which shelter birds, tiny frogs and many different native plants including huckleberries and Oregon grape. The Creek itself provides prime habitat for Coho salmon.

This trail, a half-kilometer addition to the Log Train Trail, was built over six weekend in the fall of 1999 by Frank Stini and a crew of young offenders who needed to complete community service under the Alternative Measures Program. The Alberni Environmental Coalition provided a vehicle, gas and tools, the Alberni Strategic Forest Alliance provided materials and Weyerhaeuser allowed the groups to build the trail on their land. "It shows we can all work together if we want to," said Frank Stini at the opening ceremony last December.
