Beaufort Range is Ugly Now The Beaufort Mountains used to be beautiful to look at. Now they are ugly and for whose benefit? Profits go to the shareholders of Timberwest Trust who own the trees on the mountain and to the Timberwest Corporation which owns the land. The shareholders of Timberwest Trust include pension funds and other investment groups. The work is done by contractors from the other side of the island. No Forest Practices Code regulation because it is private land. The logs are mostly exported. We are left with ugly scenery and degraded watersheds. The Beaufort Range should be made into a nature reserve so it can continue to function as a wildlife refuge and corridor. The headwaters of streams can then flow freely and bring clean water to the farms and fish streams below. Farmers at the end of Beaver Creek Road are concerned about the size and location of these clear cuts. Their water comes from the mountains. The cuts are located on a kind of flattish bench area but the cliffs below drop off suddenly and steeply. This new and growing clear cut is located right beside the headwaters of Kitsuksis Creek. Note how steep the slopes. Other new clear cuts will be located beside Hal Creek. |
