Does MacMillan Bloedel care for our Coho Stock?  Concerned Volunteers have encouraged habitat restoration and protection since 1980.  An obvious question is where has the Pulp Mill Management been since 1980?

Local Fisherman are quickly becoming outraged at this lack of caring for their livelihood.

Where have the Provincial and Federal Governments been within this time frame?   Why is the Fisheries Department not outraged.  And if the Provincial Ministry of Environment and the Federal Department of Fisheries have been looking at the situation for the last 2 1/2 years, why does this situation exist today?

High Tide.  Watering the "Riparian Zone"
The large stones mark the boundary of "the zone" on the north side of the creek.
A narrow band parallel to the creek has been enhanced to be visually appealing, however the bed of the creek is still choked with sawdust.

No known attempt has been made to remove the sawdust from the creek bed to rehabilitate this area of the creek.

On June 8th 1998, M&B's Port Alberni and Powell River paper mills were sold to Goepel McDermid Inc. of Vancouver BC for the sum of $850,000,000.00.  The new company is now known as Pacifica Papers Inc.  Attitudes in the BC forest industry are currently changing due to the efforts of the Environmental movement.  It is hoped that Pacifica Papers Inc. will emerge as paper industry trendsetters with a willingness to go beyond the minimal requirements of law in addressing these important environmental issues.
