Your email of September 26, 2008, to the Ministry of Forests regarding your
concerns about how the Drinking Water Protection Act protects groundwater in
Karst terrain has been referred to me for comment.
You are correct in identifying that Karst, is not specifically referred to in
the Drinking Water Protection Act. Similarly, fractured shale, sands and
gravels, and other features that allow rapid movement of water are also not
specified. The provisions in the Act are general enough to capture all of these
under section 23.
If you become are aware of anything that is likely to cause a drinking water
health hazard, I would encourage you to report this to your local health
authority.
