New Power Generating Plant For Port Alberni
B.C. Hydro Teams Up With Calpine Canada
PORT ALBERNI, B.C., Updated 6:44 p.m. PST December 6, 2000 (BCTV) --With natural gas prices going through the roof, you might think it strange that B.C. Hydro is going to build a power generating plant in Port Alberni fueled by natural gas.
The original idea was to build a co-generation plant adjacent to the pulp mill with the mill paying part of the cost of construction and taking the steam from the power plant.
But B.C. Hydro has now decided to team-up with independent power producer, Calpine Canada, in building the power-generating facility.
Port Alberni Mayor Gillian Trumper promised Wednesday that the $250-million Alberni generating plant would be less polluting than the co-gen plant in Campbell River.
The mayor said the plant would provide about 20 full-time jobs when it begins producing electricity from natural gas in late 2003.
A site for the facility has not yet been chosen.
