Recycling Bins and The Super Site

Written June 2000

Recycling bins behind Shopper's Drug Mart.
Overflowing recycling bins, such as this one behind the mall, are a constant problem for businesses.  When a mess is made, bin owners are called and the materials are taken away.  If it is not a recycling day, however, the bins are simply dumped in the landfill, because trucking them out of town on such days is unprofitable.
Cardboard is being collected from a  bin at Mount Klitsa Secondary.
One of very few signs in town directing people to recycling bins.  This one is located at the mall.
Recycling bins across in Port Alberni are often overflowing.  In order to combat this  problem, and to educate the public, the fenced space to the left in this picture has been designated to become the 'super site'.  All bins around town will be moved here to streamline recycling in Port Alberni.
Here, cardboard is being dumped with other waste.  The day this picture was taken was not a recycling day, but since bins were overflowing, cardboard was collected along with the garbage.
An overflowing bin - a usual scene soon to change.  At the super site, recyclable materials will be sorted more effectively and an employee will be present every day from 10am - 6pm to educate the public hands-on about how to recycle properly.
The big Budget Steel bin at the landfill.  This company recycles metals.
Unsorted glass is piled at the landfill and used as drain rock.  If the glass were sorted, however, other, more profitable markets could be capitalized on.
