Values for Mclaughlin Ridge located in China Creek watershed
- Red listed Queen Charlotte Goshawk nest site (longest record of activity)
- First choice for Wildlife Habitat Area, under FPC for Goshawk on south island (but
cant do because it is on private land)
- Highest rated Blacktail Deer Winter Range/ largest in size on South Island (MB Biologist
uses it as a bench mark). This type of habitat no longer exists on private forest land
because of logging history.
- Unconfirmed (red listed) Marbled Murrelet Habitat for nesting.
- Rare east coast dry Douglas Fir ecosystem (underrepresented in protected areas)
- Also is in Port Alberni Community watershed this area consists of very steep slopes
- MOE highest rated area in C.O.R.E. process
- Has been reserved as UWR, under FPC (it is a grand parented UWR) But not if removed from
TFL
- Grove of huge Douglas Fir trees growing at 900-1000 meter elevation interspersed with
unique meadow complexes.
One tree I have called the McLaughlin Giant is 23 10 circumference (might be a
record for size at this high elev.) many people feel this area should be in an ecological
reserve.
