Background information on speakers:
WILLIAM CHRISTIAN: biographer of George Grant, who was one of Canada's great Red Tory philosophers is professor of Political Science at University of Guelph and author of Parties, Leaders and Ideologies in Canada, The George Grant Reader; and George Grant: A Biography.
RON DART teaches in the Department of Political Science/Philosophy Department, University College of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford. He is the editor of The Red Tory Review and has published articles on conservatism in many magazines in Canada, the U.S. and England as well as two books of poetry. He is the author of The Red Tory Tradition: Ancient Roots, New Routes and The Red Tory Vision: Retrieving the Conservative Tradition.
(Ron Dart is the organizer of this conference, the first of its kind held anywhere in Canada in recent history.)
ROBIN MATHEWS: a long-time fighter for Canadian independence, who came to prominence in the late 1960s with his and fellow academic James Steele’s groundbreaking critique of the Americanization of Canadian universities. The Struggle for Canadian Universities. Mathews has taught in universities across Canada, the U.S. and Europe and is now an adjunct professor at Simon Fraser University. He has written and published books, poetry, plays and articles on literature, art, politics, economics and culture including The Canadian Intellectual Tradition; Canadian Identity; Canadian Literature: Surrender or revolution?; Treason of the Intellectuals. His latest collection of poetry is titled Being Canadian in Dirty Imperialist Times.
DAVID ORCHARD: A fourth generation Saskatchewan grain farmer, David Orchard is the chair of Citizens Concerned About Free Trade (CCAFT) and author of the best selling book The Fight for Canada: Four Centuries of Resistance to American Expansionism (Stoddart, 1993) which has been called "the Bible of Canadian nationalism."
Since 1985, David Orchard has spoken across North America in large public meetings and debates on the free trade agreements, FTA, NAFTA, MAI and WTO. A nationwide mobilization led by CCAFT successfully blocked the 1988 Canada-U.S. FTA in the Canadian Senate and forced a general election on the issue, in which a majority of Canadians cast their ballots for parties opposed to the FTA.
In 1998, Mr. Orchard ran for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada placing second to Joe Clark.
